Southeast University and Monash University Held 2020 Joint Management Committee Meeting

[Southeast University News Network, August7] (Correspondent: Yu Lu)On the morning of August 5, 2020 Video Meeting of Southeast University-Monash University Joint Management Committee was successfully held. SEU President Zhang Guangjun, Executive Vice President Wang Baoping, Vice Presidents Ding Hui, Jin Baosheng and Liu Pan, relevant principals from the Graduate School, the Research Institute, the Finance Office, the Personnel Office, Suzhou Management Committee and the International Cooperation Office, etc., Monash University President Margaret Gardner, Provost Marc Parlang, Vice Presidents Paul Townsend, Susan Elliott and Yu Aibing, and Deputy Provost Matthew Gillespie attended the meeting. The two parties discussed issues such as joint cultivation of graduate students and doctoral students, and the construction of joint research institute, etc.

At the meeting, President Zhang Guangjun expressed his concern and solicitude to colleagues working at Monash University, who have been more severely affected by the pandemic; meanwhile, President Zhang also affirmed the fruitful results achieved by Southeast University and Monash University in the field of cooperation in school running, and appreciated both parties for their tremendous efforts in promoting the construction of the Joint Graduate School and the Joint Research Institute in an efficient and sustained manner during the pandemic. He pointed out that in the future both parties should further deepen the cooperation in school running, increase the scale of teachers and the number of graduate students in Suzhou, make innovation in the joint cultivation model of doctoral students, and focus on strengthening the construction of localized scientific research platform in Suzhou so as to cultivate high-quality innovative talents, produce high-quality scientific research achievements, and upgrade the cooperation between both parties to a higher level. Meanwhile, we should continue to actively strive for Suzhou City’s support for our cooperation in school running, and facilitate the talent cultivation and the scientific research platform construction between both parties.

President Gardner highly agreed with Zhang Guangjun’s suggestions for future development, and stated that Monash University would continue to promote campus construction together with SEU and further enhance the cooperation between the two universities in the fields of talent cultivation and scientific research.

It is reported that the Southeast University-Monash University Suzhou Joint Graduate School was established in September 2012 as the first and currently the only Sino-foreign cooperative graduate school approved by the Ministry of Education of China. Relying on the high-quality disciplines and faculty of the two universities, the Joint Graduate School cultivates high-level, internationalized, innovative and application-orientated graduate and doctoral students, almost 1,000 students on campus for academic degrees at present. In parallel with the Joint Graduate School, the Monash University-Southeast University Suzhou Joint Research Institute has been also established for multidisciplinary research and the cultivation of graduate students, especially doctoral students. Southeast University-Monash University Joint Management Committee is composed of leaders and representatives of the two universities. The meeting is held twice a year to deliberate on major issues in the fields of academic, scientific research, personnel and finance involved in the development of the Joint graduate School and the Research Institute. As affected by the pandemic this year, the meeting was held online.
