Qi Kang, male, professor, PhD supervisor, architect, planner and architectural educator, born on October 28, 1931 at Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, native of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, graduated from the Department of Architecture, School of Engineering of Nanjing University (currently the School of Architecture, Southeast University) and then stayed at school to teach after graduation.He once served as Director of the Teaching and Research Group, Dean, Secretary of CPC General Branch of the Department, Assistant Dean of Nanjing Institute of Technology, Deputy Director and then Director of Architectural Research Institute, General Consultant of Architectural Design Research Institute, etc. in succession. In 1965, he was elected as Director and Standing Director of the Architectural Society of China, and has been subsequently serving as Director of all previous years. Since 1984, he has participated in the 3rd, 4th and 5th academic degree evaluation team of the State Council and served as the convener of the civil engineering and the architecture groups. Since 1989, he has been serving as Director of the Professional Guiding Committee of Architecture Discipline of National Institutions of Higher Learning, the consultant of the Guiding Committee since 1998, was selected as the Chinese survey and design master (architecture) in 1990 and a member of the 8thand 9th Session of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) since 1992. In 1993, he was elected as the academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and has been serving as a member of the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council since 1995. In 1997, he was elected as a foreign academician of the Academie d'Architecture. In 2004, he served as a member of the expert panel of the National Postdoctoral Administration Committee.

Academician Qi Kang has long been engaged in scientific research, design and teaching in the field of architecture and urban planning. As the academic leader of Architectural Design and Theory, the national and key discipline of our university, he designed (participated in and took charge of) almost 100 projects, large or small, since the 1950s, including the Memorial Hall and the Monument at Nanjing Yuhuatai Martyrs Cemetery, Zhou Enlai Memorial Hall at Nanjing Meiyuan Xincun, the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, Fujian Mountain Villa, Mount Huang International Hotel, Zhengzhou Henan Museum, Fujian Historic Museum and the extension project of Shenyang “September 18” Historical Museum, etc.. Over the years, he took charge of and participated in about 20 research projects that have been completed or under construction. Among others, the “Urbanization Process of Relatively Developed Regions and Technological and Economic Policies for Small Cities” won the second prize of the Award for Progress in Science and Technology of the Ministry of Construction. The Synthesis Planning Method for Villages and Towns, the Theories and Methods of Urban Architectural Environment Planning and Design, the Urban Environment Design and the Theories and Methods of Modern Urban Design  were awarded the first, the second and the third prizes of the Award for Progress in Science and Technology of the Ministry of Education and the first prize for natural sciences of the Ministry of Education. Such architectural design projects as Wuyi Mountain Villa, “Zhou Enlai Memorial Hall at Nanjing Meiyuan Xincun, the Memorial Hall and the Monument at Nanjing Yuhuatai Martyrs Cemetery, etc. won two Gold Awards, one Silver Award and two Copper Awards of National Excellent Project Design. In the 1980s, two of the nation’s top ten architectural art works were worked out by Prof. Qi Kang and won the 2nd and 3rd places. His works were once exhibited overseas in France, Japan, Switzerland and Canada, etc.. In 2003, the Theories and Methods of Modern Urban Design won the first prize for natural sciences of the Ministry of Education. In addition, he has published almost 100 papers including Social structure of Architectural Creation, Concept of Architecture, Urban Cultural Characteristics and Urban Morphology, etc. and almost 20 monographs including “Urban Architecture”, etc. Up to now, he has cultivated 26 PhD students and over 70 graduates. In 2000, he won the first Liang Sicheng Architecture Prize in China and was ranked on the top. In 2004, he was awarded the first Architectural Education Award as convened by the Architectural Society of China.

Academician Qi Kang is currently serving as Honorary Dean of the Department of Architecture of Dalian University of Technology. He has been appointed as Honorary Professor of South China University of Technology, Wuxi Institute of Light Industry, Chongqing University, Chongqing University of Architecture and Yunnan University of Science and Technology, etc. while concurrently appointed as Professor of the Department of Architecture of Zhejiang University, Southwest Jiaotong University and Qingdao Institute of Technology.

In recent years, he has been awarded many honors and titles such as “NationalMiddle-Aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions”, “Meritorious Statesman in BuildingNew Nanjing”, “National Advanced Science and Technology Worker in Colleges and Universities” and “Advanced Academic Pacemaker in Jiangsu Province”, etc.
