Southeast University Won the First Prize of Student Supercomputer Challenge

On April 28, the finals of 2017 World Student Supercomputer Challenge(ASC17) came to an end in Wuxi, Jiangsu. The Southeast University Team, standing put from around 230 domestic and foreign teams, broke into the top 20, entered the final and eventually won the first prize. Tsinghua University Team won the championship and Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics was runner-up. CCTV Evening News, Jiangsu TV and other media had reported the event.

  

ASC, sponsored by Chinese relevant departments and co-sponsored by Asia Supercomputing Association, National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi and Inspur, is the worlds largest college student supercomputer competition. ASC, together with Global Supercomputer Challenge (began in U.S 2007) and International Supercomputer Challenge (began in Germany 2012), are listed as the worlds most authoritative top three international college student supercomputing competitions. ASC is aimed at promoting the exchange and training of supercomputing talents from different countries and regions, enhancing the application and research ability of supercomputing, making full advantage of supercomputings scientific and technological driving force, and improving technological and industrial innovation. ASC17 has 230 teams from 15 countries, including China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, India, Russia, Hungary, Brazil and South Africa. It is the biggest competition since 2012.

  

It is the first time for Southeast University to participate in ASC. Teachers and students from School of Life Science form the team. Li Jian is the lead teacher. Lu Ning from the Life Science Excellence Class, Chien-shiung Wu College is the team leader. The team members are Huang Lingying, Yang Yun, Fang Mengchu and Su Tian. After more than five months of systematic training and intensive exercise, the SEU team joined the final in National Supercomputing Center in Wuxin from April 24 to 28. The final match requires the team designs supercomputing system by themselves in the 3000-watt power constrains and does the optimized internationally-accepted benchmark test, artificial intelligence traffic prediction, genome assembly and materials science and other cutting-edge scientific and engineering applications. And the team also needs to complete the high-resolution ocean numerical simulation using the worlds fastest supercomputer Sunway Taihu Light which core is designed by Chinese. After a week of competition, the SEU team won the first prize.
